Assignment 2- "Monograms"- [Stenciling] Part 1

To be honest, before doing this, I thought about that is this the same method that we used for our paper cutout assignments? IT IS! (I think) :P

So tomorrow, we're going to print our monograms on six different mediums that we choose. We have to get our stencils done by today before its too late to apologize~ ♩ ♪ ♫ We can use fabric paint, acrylic, or spray to make it on our chosen mediums.

As a designer (future), we have to be wise and take wise move so that we don't feel burden. Ms. Lisa told us that we don't need to draw out different sizes of our monograms, we just need to photocopy different sizes.

Make Your Life Easier~ :D

Therefore, I think I'm not wise enough. As I said before, I printed many different sizes of my monogram because I'm not sure which sizes suits my six mediums. This can counted as not-wise movement..
Starting from size 50-380% of my monograms

Anyway, I start cutting the shape out of the graph paper and tracing the outline on transparent paper as stencils. Cutting on the transparent paper is really need some skills. The difficulties was like one level higher than the paper cutout since the transparent paper is a plastic, it's quite hard to cut. I managed to cut out the shape but it looks horrible as you can see..

Later on, I tried to cut on my acid-free drawing paper and I managed to cut out nicely but not a perfect cut.

Ooopss.. left out my monograms on the picture..

Assignment 2- "Monograms"- [Finalizing]

I had sketched plenty of monograms using my own initials to let Ms. Lisa see since previous week I only had few ideas to show. Here's the sketches:

Ms. Lisa liked this three designs most and asked me to explore more from it. So I stared to work on it. These it the 'evolution' of the first chosen design..

Triangle-shape JG into trapezium-shape then into rectangle-shape JG initials

Hexagon-shape JG evolution into round-shape JG initials

I drew it on a piece of graph paper to measure the size correctly. When drawing on the graph paper, Ms.Lisa changed my design into a bold line heart-shape design and I think this is better than my previous one. Ms. Lisa is too awesome! :D  However, I still have to explore to see if there's any more possibility to make it more perfect.

Hexagon-shape JG into heart-shape JG initials

I added some lines that are thinner but it will be difficult for me when doing stencil. So, to make my life easier as what Ms.Lisa told me, I changed the line bold again and slightly make a little hole at the bottom of the heart-shape. So the outcome would be like this;

Ms. Lisa finalized my design and I started to photocopied it in different sizes. Since we are printing this onto six different mediums, I needed to print whether which size fitted which mediums the best but I'm not too sure what I should print on it later, I photocopied it by increasing 10% constantly.. It started with 50% of the size, then it goes like, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%, 110%, 120%, until 360%.  ( .___.)"

Assignment 2- "Monograms" [Sketching]

We started to do the sketching of our own monograms using our initials. It is fun to do but also quite challenging. So basically my initials are GSJ but I tend to use my nickname which is Jessica Gan which is more make sense when introducing to people. Then my initials changed to J.G :)

Here's what I came out with, not only J.G, but also S.J.

Ms.Lisa picked two sketches and wanted me to explore more from these two design;

I'm truly sorry, Ms.Lisa that I couldn't give more ideas and sketches during class. :( Now that I know, it's really not easy to create a new monograms or logos. At first I thought it was simple, so I'm being very picky and comment a lot on other symbols and logos. To make a good logos or monograms, it has to take much effort and sketches to do it but not just sketch it. It has to have meanings behind it. :)

After the class, I felt really frustrated that I couldn't make more sketches and ideas. So I went back and keep on trying hard and explore more so that I could think more of awesome monograms.

Assignment 2- "Monograms" [Introduction]

Our new assignment started right after submitted our first assignment. (๑•́ ₃ •̀๑)

So for our 2nd assignment, we can create our own monograms logos using our own initials just like creating our own branding logo! Our pretty, Ms. Lisa had shown us some examples of the monograms.
Edited by me.

Then she gave us 2 hours to go to the library and search books for some monographs and pick 6 difference patterns which we prefer the most. Although Google is out BFF (best friend forever), this time we will need to bond some relationship with the books in the library too. The reason we choose some design and monographs from the books is to identity what theme and styles suits us. We shown the design that we prefer to the whole class and Ms.Lisa, and discuss together about our design and exchange opinions.

I couldn't believed that my theme was "Feminine"!  (º ロ º๑)

It supposed to be either mysterious or evil because the fonts that I prefer and showed them was a little like 'signature-style' or handwriting-style or doctor's handwriting style that have swirl like swing. In my view, I do think that a words that have many swirl is like an illusion, because sometimes when we add too much and too complicated, we might not be able to identified the actual alphabet of the words. (๑><๑) For example,

Here's the design that I picked from the books and known it as 'feminine' theme.
These are actually called cursive writing if not mistaken. :3

Most of my friends said I'm doesn't suit for the feminine theme and they said.....I'M EVIL ! :P
To be honest, I couldn't find the design that I prefer the most in the library books. It looks something like this..

I actually got my own design of fonts which I had created myself. hehe :)

So anyway, Ms. Lisa told us to think.. just think first for like 10 designs based on our new theme and sketch it during the next class. When our design get approve by Ms.Lisa, we'll start the print making it onto 6 different mediums. It can be in T-shirts, umbrellas, bags and so on. The 2nd part of this assignment is to make it into a pattern and also a poster about our logo.

Assignment 1- Final Submission!

The day has come, we have to do the presentation for both of our paper cut out. However, we make it like what we had done previous sem by putting our artwork on the window glass there and Ms. Lisa said that it was too boring the way we present it, and we need to present it with design student's style like what seniors done. So we had discussed and changed our plan. We placed the chairs on the table so that it can turn and placed our artwork on the chairs and below the chairs. Then, we begin our presentation. I can say that all my friends had done a fantastic job. :)

So, these are my final artwork which I had shown on the previous posts. Hope Ms. Lisa like it. :3
